Tutors comments

Overall Comments:

A good assignment.
Your drawing techniques and sensitive approach are very pleasing at this starting point in your course work. At times you are loosing a little structure and accuracy. Try to really create solid structure and composition before you start to use shading techniques.

Your blog was informative. I must admit that I do miss seeing the work first hand, especially the two larger still life pieces! Would it be possible to show me the main pieces of the next assignment if they are not too large? Possibly the strong wide cardboard postal tubes would be suitable?

Your learning log shows a good start but needs expanding still more at this stage.

Feedback on assignment

Making Marks
Good experimentation and creativity shown using a comprehensive selection of marks and media. Good work. Good use of sketch book.

Basic shapes and Fundamental Form
Some good pencil work here Salema; you could differ the line weight more in some of the drawings. You have had some loss of accuracy in the symmetry and structure, try and examine your work upside down to see if the ellipses are balanced. I would like to see the log comments expanded still further by including your responses to individual pieces of work by commenting on the strong and weak areas, the ‘why’s’ and ‘wherefores’.

Tone and Form
Again, sensitive work, carefully planned. The end results show good observational skills and a sensitive approach to the application of tone. Be careful of understating the reflected light and overstating the cast shadows. Continue your awareness of these points; the ends of the bananas seem to disappear into the shadow and we loose their structure.
Still life work; good tonal observation but a loss of accuracy in the ellipses.

Negative space: no work shown.

Reflected Light
Good work again, with attention to detail. Well done. You have achieved an excellent tonal depth by using darker tones in your shadow areas.

Using Textures
Good sketchbook work. Again, we need to expand your comments on your work.

Enlarging an image
Good work, with good use of creativity and experimentation.

Still Life

Good preparatory work shown in sketchbook.

Man made still life; well thought out arrangement of a number of challenging objects. Good transparency and reflected light shown with accurate and sensitive technique. Good structural investigation through a wide variety of preparatory studies. Well done. Keep checking your structure Salema, I feel at times you are loosing a little accuracy.

Natural form still life. Lovely use of pencil techniques to describe the different textural elements. Again, good preparatory work shown, creating a sensitive, well observed drawing.  Good final composition.

Learning logs/critical essays
Try and expand this area by commenting on why you feel a drawing did or didn’t work. What you would do differently etc. Keep experimenting and trying to find different ways to respond to the exercises and combine the different drawing media.

Sketchbook work
Keep plenty of notation alongside your sketches. Good development of ideas shown.
